Unless you are well into your 50’s or 60’s you probably don’t remember when record labels would sign artists as “talent” and spend 2-3 albums/years developing them. In the modern music business this kind of “deal” is extinct. Soul Canopies calling is to serve indie and unsigned artists, at various stages of their career, not just to record their music but to collaboratively develop their project holistically and deliver it to the market successfully whilst remaining independent artists.
A SPACE WHERE SONGWRITING IS PLAYFULLY EXPLORED
Songwriting is often an extremely cathartic experience. Feelings emerge half formed in words and melodies, rhythms and harmony. It can also often seem mysterious and elusive. It’s not often experienced as technical and measured. The sweet spot between catharsis, mystery and technique is where frustration and blocks return to fun.

Our goal at Sole Canopy is to contribute 100 beautiful albums to the world one single at a time. We take a novel approach to album making thats designed to take advantage of the modern release cycle and suit the self funded reality of indie artists.

Hi I’m Steve…
…and I run Sole Canopy. I built it myself literally from the ground up, I mean I dug out the foundations, fixed up the frames, the roof, soldered the audio equipment, and built the furniture. I know what it means to labour over something beautiful you love. I’ve been joyfully labouring as a musician and DIY recording enthusiast for over 20 years, which is exactly what lead me here.
It’s been quite the story so far…

I try to make the Sole Canopy blog a place with refreshing perspectives on artistic life, mostly for musicians. I think of it more as a dialog between us so you’re welcome to write replies if you feel inspired, I almost always write back…

Daniel Tomolaris and Steve Barnard both produce out of the studio, with a musical friendship that dates back over a decade our constant curiosity and joy over great songs and sounds make it a pleasure to be collegues.

Sole Canopy was created by artists for artist to feel like a living artwork than a sterile studio. A custom built space with all the comforts of a lounge room and the capacity of a pro studio.
Filled with houseplants and analogue recording hardware Sole Canopy’s modular nature be a creative space full of natural light or a soundproof space perfect for tracking.
