I’ve been making DIY recording studio spaces since I was 17 (23 years) when I recorded my first demo’s, EP and then album. I’ve also recorded in some of the
best studios in Sydney. Sole Canopy is the best of both experiences.

“Sole Canopy is a great place to film a live recording with way more vibe on camera than any other studio I know both inside and out.”

Neale Whitaker, Artisma Creative Co

I got really into the process not only building the house and the furniture but also the studio equipment. I assembled and calibrated more than a dozen pieces of analogue gear inc vintage style mics, compressors, eq’s and pre-amps.

THE STORY…so far.

I’ve always wanted my own space to make music that I didn’t have to dismantle when I was done. A warm, inviting, intimate space stripped of all the intimidation that often come with studios. So during COVID lockdowns with nothing much else to do I set to making exactly that.

With the help of friends and family I built Sole Canopy, as far as I can tell the worlds only commercially open Tiny House Recording Studio. It took me three years from first having the idea till the day an artist recorded the first demo. I’m always fine tuning it as I continue to get to know the space.

Making music is whimsical, romantic and technical and the idea of building a Tiny House felt the same. I wanted my studio from the ground up to feel like a work of art so it we’d feel like making art when we were in it.

The room has been acoustically treated and there
are modular baffles which mean we can record DI
and midi with the doors wide open and the breeze
blowing or get every nook and cranny baffled up
and track the most intimate vocal in silent isolation.

I’m so proud of the studio and the music we are making here. I love the way I feel every time I walk in there and I love seeing the same feeling on artists faces when they first arrive.

I hope to share it with you soon!

Sincerely

Steve
