Why Record an Album?
People say albums are dead.
I say that's bullshit.
Their too long. Too slow. Too meta.
But if you're even thinking about recording one… you know that’s not true.
A good single can stop you in your tracks. But an album? That stays with you on the whole damn journey.
If you're considering making an album, it’s probably because you love them. You love more than just one or two songs. You’re love long walks on the beach kinda person, and you don’t want to take just a quick lap of a carpark
You likely have a list of albums that sound incredible, stirred something in you creatively, or even changed your life.
Sure, a good single is fun, and playlists are a vibe. But albums? Albums are sonic novels — the modern symphony. Long, indulgent, rich with movement and motif. They're made to be read and reread, heard and reheard, lived and relived.
Maybe you're like me and albums have shaped your life. They’ve soundtracked whimsy and joy, grief and sadness in ways only albums can — road trips, heartbreak, dance off's, study sessions. You’ve probably danced, cried, laughed, sung nonsense lyrics, and lost your voice to your favourites. Alone, with friends, or even strangers.
When I built Sole Canopy Studio, I had my heart set on indulging in that musical, poetic and technical journey of bringing albums into the world.
The process of taking an album from the heart to the world requires a brave balance of creativity, curiosity, analysis and acumen. I love that journey. Making space for its highs and lows. Space for it to become what you want it to be and more importantly what it wants to be.
I’ve sat with artists through the full arc — from fragile demo to full-length masterpiece — and as scary and overwhelming as it sometimes got I wouldn’t trade that process for anything.
Have you got an album stirring? Do you know there’s a longing in you to add your own musical punctuation mark to your life, and to the life of music. If so, I’d love to hear about it. Whether we work together or not, drop me a line or book a studio tour. If I can be even a small part of getting your album from soul to speakers, from a journal sketch to coloured vinyl, I’d be stoked.
